INTRODUCTION

The research and gathering of the enclosed information took several years. A lot of time was spent calling and visiting relatives and various historical societies.

This data is far from complete and anyone who is willing to make additions, especially concerning Joe Smith or his parents, please do so and share with the rest of the family.

This family history is not just for some of the Smith family members but for everyone and also to be able to pass down to our children and have a record of our family for years to come.

It would be wonderful if a person or persons would take one of the direct descendants from Joe and Becky or Joe and Fannie and complete the history for their family, including all grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great great grandchildren, etc. There are a total of 18 children, which would be 18 chapters in our Smith Family Booklet. Also, if there are any older pictures available that would be great.

THE BEGINNING AS WE KNOW IT
Joe Smith was born April 1852 in Virginia and according to the 1900 Alabama census, he worked as a farmer living in Autawga and Lowdnes County, Alabama. One census data states Joe's birthplace as Alabama, but his parents are not listed. He died in 1916 in Autawga County, Alabama.

In the 1870 Alabama census, Joe Smith was living with 3 people: Patience Smith (age documented as 65 years old); Edward (6 years old); and Margaret (3 years old). At this time, no further information has been obtained concerning Patience, Margaret or Edward.

In 1874, Joe married his first wife, Beckie in Lowdnes County, Alabama. Beckie was born in July 1852 in Alabama. Joe and Becky had 10 children.

Rapier was born in 1874 and died in October 1938. He was married to Mary Hall. They had 2 children: Alice and Esther.

Sam was born in June 1876 and died in May 1930. He was married to Rosa Drayton, who was born around 1884 in Alabama. The 1910 census report states them to be married 10 years at that time, with 5 of 7 children living.

Their children:

• Maria born November 26, 1901 and died November 10, 1985. She married Charlie Griffin and had 1 child: William Griffin, Sr. (died November 11, 1973)
  
  William married Ernestine Holmes and had 8 children: Wynee Griffin-Wilson, Veronica Griffin, William, Jr., Lajetta Griffin, Ernest Griffin, Louis Griffin, Alethea Griffin, Latricia.
  
  
• Katie Smith Evans born in 1904 and died December 24, 1995. She was married to Jonah Williams and they had 2 daughters: Frankie Mae Williams Hall born on November 11, 1923 and Gertrude Williams Evans Hall.
  
  Frankie Mae married Ernest Hall on December 23, 1942 and had 11
  children: Ernest Hall, Jr., Doris Hall Jackson, Barbara Hall Ford, Carol Hall, Minnie O. Hall, Sandra Hall Smith, Samuel Hall, James Edward Hall, Robert Earl Hall, Darlene Hall Pouncy and Alfred Hall (who married Cynthia Wade and they have two children: Ryan and Ellis.
  
  Gertrude (died November 20, 1997) had 5 children: Rose Mary Wright, Clara Kate Williams Anderson, Edith Diane Hall (deceased); Michael Mitchell and Harriet H. Pullom.

Lucy was born June 7, 1877 and died June 16, 1974. She married her first husband, Alex Harris, in 1900. Her second husband’s name was Henry Hall. Her third husband was Cornelius Johnson. She had 9 children:

• Lillie Bell Harris was born in February 1900 and died June 1983 in Jefferson County, Alabama.
  
  
• Rebecca Harris born in 1902 in Lowdnes County, Alabama had 2 children: Mamie Harris and Alex McKinsey. Mamie had 5 children: Deborah Parks, Lucy Hall, Georgia Barnes, Linda Yelder and
  Armatine Howard
  
  
• Estoria Harris born in 1905 in Lowdnes County, Alabama and had two sons fathered by Odis Marvin. The two sons are Willie Marvin and Otis Marvin (Myers).
  
  Willie Marvin was born on September 15, 1919 and married Ola M. Golson in January 1940. Wilie died on January 19, 1983. They had eight chidren:
  
  Willie J. was born on September 9, 1939. He married Dorothy in June 1981. They have two children - Marcus and Marisha. Willie has one child from a previous marriage - Cynthia. They have four grandchildren.
  
  Ruthie (Zeigler) was born on April 9, 1942. Ruthie died on November 29, 1974. She married Calvin Zeigler. They have one child - Ruthiecal. She has six children from a previous marriage - Tommy, Trammell, Gregory, Rodney, Crystal and Lisa (deceased).
  
  James was born on September 19, 1944. He married Francis on December 22, 1980. They have one child - James II. He has one child from a previous marriage - James.
  
  Joseph was born on February 22, 1946. Joseph died in the Vietnam War on July 4, 1967.
  
  Sam L. was born on June 3, 1948. He married Percie (Williams) on December 31, 1966. They have three children - Samuel, Stafford and Soncha. They have three grandchildren - Chason, Skyler and Starion.
  
  John L. was born on August 17, 1950. He married Valorie L. on June 24, 1994. They have one child together - John L. II. John L. has two children from a previous marriage - Valerie and Veronica and Valorie has one child - Juantae.
  
  Ann (Williams) was born on December 2, 1952. She married Alfred Williams II in 1971. They have two children - Alfred III and April. They have one grandchild - Alfred IV.
  
  Vonzetta (Austin) was born on December 23, 1956 and has three children - Derek, Clinton and Vonemaetria. She has one grandchild - Cloeie.
  
  Otis was raised by Estoria’s Aunt Clara Myers from birth. Otis Myers was born August 1, 1923. He married Lucy Mae McBride (4/13/42). They had 9 children (Otis Myers Jr., Robert Lee, Betty Jean, Willie James, David Lee, Jessie Frank, Dorothy Jean, Walter Lee, and Mattie Mae). Otis died 12/29/2000.
  
  Otis, Jr. was born July 13, 1942 married Rarilyn Young on December 31, 1995. They have 4 children from previous marriages Zandra Alicia Myers Willis, Sonya Felice Myers, Sakeisha Young & Brittany Young, 4 grandchildren DeAndre’ Myles & Jasmine born to Zandra and Myles Willis and Anthony Sanderson and Desiree’ DeRamus born to Sonja.
  
  Robert Lee was born October 21, 1943 married Delois Ann (Davis) (12/7/68). They have two children Angela Regina and Joseph and three grandchildren Porcha Myers, Mercedes and Dolaureen Keith born to Angela and Eddie Keith.
  
  Betty Jean was born December 24, 1944 has no children. Betty sustained a severe choking incident around the age of 6 that left her mentally ill. She resides at Enterprise Group Home.
  
  Willie (William) James was born February 26, 1946 married Barbie A. Causby on May 16, 1987. They have 4 children; William James Jr., Stephanie Lynn and 2 from a previous marriage; Shannel Lynn and Jaethan Myers. They have one granddaughter, Sarai Roberts born to Shannel and Michael Roberts.
  
  David Lee was born June 30, 1947 married Gwendolyn Snail in 1971. They have 3 children Merrick; David, Jr. & Yolanda and 2 grandchildren David III born to David Jr. and Richard born to Yolanda.
  
  Jessie Frank was born August 24, 1950 and married Annette Jones (7/11/1975). They have one child Jamie Renee.
  
  Dorothy Jean was born November 30, 1952 married John H. Anderson, III (3/29/78). They have 2 children Renetta Marie and Jonathan LaVar and one 1 grandchild Eric DeShawn born to Renetta.
  
  Walter Lee was born February 9, 1955 married Freddie Mae Wallace (3/16/75). They have 4 children Monica Tomika, Therisita Andrea, Walter Lee Jr. & Tyshonda Ladell and 3 grandchildren Melanie Bresha and Kiera Myers born to Monica and Kamran Jamall DeRamus born to Andrea.
  
  Mattie Mae was born September 9, 1957 married Ray Charles Jackson (3/26/76). They have 4 children, Marcus, Marcia, Reginald & Ryan and 4 grandchildren, TJ, khalil, & Ian born to Marcia and Cedric Jackson and Kori Fry by Marcus and Trilisa Fry Jackson.
  
  
  
• Elijah Harris was born December 8, 1906 in Lowdnes County, Alabama and died in September 1981 in Autauga County, Al.
  
  
• Mattie Harris was born June 6, 1910 in Lowdnes County, Alabama and died in February 1980 in Montgomery County, Alabama. She was married to Edward Rogers.
  
  
• James Hall, Sr. was born July 23, 1912 and died March 23, 1996. He was married to Elvene McCall (died April 6, 2000) and they had 12 children, 22 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren and 13 great great grandchildren.

• William born September 9, 1904 in Lowndes County, Alabama and died May 28, 1981. He was married to Dallas Pringle in 1926. They had 9 children: William, Jr., Eddie James, Thomas (deceased 2000), Robert, Ralph E. (deceased), Bertha Martin, Hattie Fennell, Francis McClain (deceased) and Lorene Knox (deceased).
  
  
• Annie Smith Yarbrough born August 20, 1907 and died December 28, 1969. She had no children.
  
  
• Fannie, date of birth unknown. She died in 1908 and never married nor had any children.
  
  
• Harry (Jack) born February 10, 1910 and died November 3, 1993. He married Annie Wiggins on March 6, 1953 and they had 6 children: Charles (born October 25, Marilyn born October 11, Richard born May 25, Wanda born November 31, Tracy born September 14 and Paulette born September 14.
  
  
• Roland was born on August 21, 1912 and died June 14, 1973. He married Annie Mae Walker on December 24, 1933 by Rev. Tom Oliver. Annie Mae was born on May 26, 1916 in Snowden, Alabama and passed away March 23, 1998. They had 11 children and were married for 40 years at Roland’s time of death.

  Betty Jane Norris born March 24 and was married to J. W. Norris (deceased) and had four children: Denise Brown, Shari Chavis, Allen Norris (deceased June 22, 2003) ) and Traci Holland.
  
  Juanita DuPree born August 5 and is married to Charles Dupree. They have two children: Corey DuPree and Erica Dicara. Erica is married to Charles DiCara and has one child: Kayla.
  
  Thelma Victoria Mason born February 10 and is married to James Mason. They have four children: James Gregory, Jeff, Donna and Terri.
  
  Doris Ann Ribner born July 28 and is married to Paul Ribner and they have one daughter: Sarah
  
  Jacqueline McGraw born October 11and is married to Sullivan McGraw and they have four children: Michael, Brandon, Brittany and Bethany.
  
  Ronald born January 4 and is married to Linda. They have two children: Nikki and Ronald, Jr.
  
  Robert Earl born October 25 and is married to Rosalia. They have three children: Andrea Hill, Robert, Jr. and Roland. Andrea is married to Jason Hill and they have two children: Reese and Marly.
  
  Deborah Jean Ledyard born November 14 and was married to Erskine Williams and had two children: Jody Williams and Deandra Williams. Jody has two children: T'Keeha and Unity. Deborah later married Robert Ledyard.
  
  Renee Hauser born June 17 and is married to Russell Hauser and have three children: Bridgett, Russell, Jr. and Brian.

• Sam was born March 14, 1914 and died August 8, 2004. His first wife was Daisy (deceased) and they had 2 children: Parthenia Davis born February 3, 1936 and Ada Jean Stewart born March 11, 1937. His second wife was Hannah Hamilton (deceased) and they had 3 children: Betsy Calhoun (deceased 2008), Nathan born July 20, 1959 and Nathaniel born July 20, 1959.
  
  
• Mary Jane was born May 3, 1916. She married Mack Evans (deceased June 29, 1981) on December 22, 1933 and had 10 children: Willie James, Eugene, Reubin (died August 9, 2008), Eddie James, Annie Watkin, Mattie DeJarnette, Roberta Mays, Mary Duncan, Mack Jr. (born September 1, 1934 and died December 22, 1968) and Will (born May 1, 1938 and died September 21, 1978).
  
  
• Mary Ella was born October 3, 1918. She married Clarence Thomason (deceased) in 1941 and she had 2 children: Horace Mays (deceased April 28, 2005) and Morris Mays. Morris is married to Callie and they have one daughter and two grandchildren.
  
  
• Eddie born January 21, 1921. He never married and had no children. Eddie passed away on February 10, 2003.

Jody was born in February 1887 in Lowdnes County, Alabama and died in December 1929 in Autauga County, Al.

Martha Ann was born in 1888 in Lowdnes County, Alabama

Clara was born in May 1889 and married Willie Myers. She died on October 11, 1981. They had foster children: Otis Myers, James Hall, and Clara K. Anderson.

Lois was born in September 1890.

According to the 1900 Alabama census, Rev. Alex Givan was born in April 1835 in Georgia and worked as a farmer. He was also a minister and founder of Mt. Canaan Baptist Church in 1891, where many of our relatives attended as children and some adults still attend.

Rev. Givan married Ella in 1860. She was born in May 1845 and they had 9 children: Lizzie was born in 1862, Ida was born in 1870, Ella was born in 1871, Lydie was born in 1872, Willie was born in 1874, William was born in 1877, Eddie was born in March 1883, Parthenia was born May 5, 1884, Fannie was born in June 1885.

Two of Rev. Givan’s daughters (Parthenia and Fannie) married two brothers (Will Smith and Matthew Smith, sons of Joe and Becky).

On December 31, 1903, Joe Smith married his second wife, Fannie Poindexter. She was born in January 1870. Their wedding ceremony was performed by Rev. Alex Givan at Howard Place.

According to Mrs. Queenie Hall, she remembers when her father, Joe Smith, died. She and her mother (Fannie) had gone to pick cotton and upon returning home, discovered Joe Smith dead in their home, possibly as a result of a stroke. Queenie was 8 or 9 years old at the time. No death certificate could be obtained.

They had 8 children.

David Sr. born April 15, 1900 and died May 9, 1994. He married his first wife, Lucy Taylor and they had 4 children:

• Rosie Lee Mitchell born October 20, 1922 and married Robert Mitchell and had 5 children: Henry, Shirley, Jessie, Odessia and Willie.
  
  Henry married Lillie Bell and had five children: Beverly (Jack) Michael, Wilma, Alfonso and Gail (Orlandis). Nine grandchildren: Andre, Eria, Jack, Janae, Sada, Lakeitha, Ryan, Andrea, Jarell & India and three great grandchildren
  
  Shirley married Eugene Arthur and had four children: Gwen (Willie), Perry (born May 18, 1967 and passed away June 8, 2007), Candi and Mark. Five grandchildren: Adrian, Andre'. Kiana, April and Joy.
  
  Jessie had no children
  
  Odessia married Jesse Steel and had two children - Rita (Orien) and Jesse. They have two grandchildren: Courtney and Chloe.
  
  Willie married Carolyn and has three children: Ashley, Eric and Erica.
  
  
• Parthenia Williams born April 4, 1924 and married Robert Williams and had 6 children: Lucy, Mary, Ruby, Brenda, John, Wayne and an adopted son, John Boozer.
  
  Lucy married Jesse Rushing and has three children: Yolanda Fay, Willie (Deborah) and Cherise. Ten grandchildren: Sheronda, Delorian, Delonda, Lakeisha, Stacye, Willie, Dwight, Tyrise, Tyrell and Darrell and one great grandchild, Djuan.
  
  Mary died on February 22, 2006 and she had two children: Kelvin (LaTrese) and Dwayne (Viviann) and three grandchildren: Kyra, Webster and Dwayne.
  
  Ruby had no children.
  
  Brenda had five children: Valencia, Patricia, Alecia, Victoria and Shania and four grandchildren: Daysha, Carney, Tamara and JaDon.
  
  John married Deborah and has one son, John, Jr.
  
  Wayne has no children.
  
  John Boozer has three children: Nneka, Lamika and John and one grandchild: Damien.
  
  
• Ruby Ceu Harris born November 3, 1927 and married Wilie Harris and had 8 children: Diane, Ricky, Lena, Verline, David, Sheryl, Karen and Phillip

  David Sr. married his second wife, Betty, who was born June 7, 1913 and died May 29, 1984. They had five children: Anna, David, Jr., Lula, Sammie and Dollie.
  
  
• Anna was born June 11, 1932 and married Barney Staudmire and had 2 children: Patricia and Pamela.
  
  Patricia married Jerome Anderson and had 3 children: Marlon (wife Shadia and children: Zoe, Caleb and Hannah); Syketo (wife Keto) and son Randy. Patricia later married Will Harris.
  
  Pamela married Frank Harris and has no children.
  
  
• David Jr. born August 6, 1942 and married Corine. They had five children: Jackie, Sheila, Barbara, Tony and LeKecia.

• Dollie born December 25, 1948 and married John and had two children: Greg and Tracye. Dollie is now married to Steve Williams.

Daniel was born in 1906 and married Willie Mae Thomas. They had 5 children: Ethel Segrest, Florence Bush, Catherine Underwood, John and Betty Smith.

Marcelius was born in 1907 and married Bessie. They had 3 children: Bessie Kate, Marcelius, Jr. and Sharon Kate

Queenie Smith Hall born April 13, 1908 and married Robert Maltimore and they had 3 children and 10 great grandchildren. Queenie died on February 14, 2003. Her children are: Willie Daniel, Gene and Harriett.
